We have granted you this privilege as an exception so that no blame may be attached to you. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
Dr. Munir Munshey
Oh prophet! We have made your wives lawful for you _ provided their agreed nuptial-dower has been paid _ and the slave women Allah has granted you. (Other women lawful for you to marry are): the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts _ those of them who migrated with you (from Makkah)_ and the believing woman who wants to enter the prophet´s household as his wife and he wants to espouse her. This (more than four wives) is an exemption especially for you, not for any other believer. We know what We have mandated for the believers concerning their wives, and the captive women. You are exempted so as to remove the difficulty you face! (The difficulty: the taboo, the culturally imposed restriction against marrying the former wives of the adopted sons, had to be broken by an actual example. It had to be done without divorcing any of the existing wives. The solution: suspend the limit of four wives for the prophet). Allah is the most Forgiving and the most Merciful. NB: Another taboo broken by this divinely ordained marriage was the restriction against cousin marriages. The woman was the prophet´s first cousin

O you An-Nabi! Verily, We made lawful to you your consorts to whom you have delivered their ujoor; and that whom your right (hands) held in trust — out of those whom Allah has gifted to you; and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts — who have migrated with you; and a Believing woman if she offered her self for (the mission of) the Prophet — provided the Prophet intended that he may take her in wedlock. This is a permission exclusively for you (Prophet), excluding the rest of the Believers. Indeed, We knew what We have enjoined upon them about their consorts, and what their right (hands) held in trust. (The permission and restriction applicable to the Prophet) is given in order that there remains no difficulty for you (in boosting your mission of propagation). And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, continuously Merciful
O Prophet! We have permitted to you your wives to whom you have given their dowries, and those you already have, as granted to you by God, and the daughters of your paternal uncle, and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncle, and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you, and a believing woman who has offered herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet desires to marry her, exclusively for you, and not for the believers. We know what We have ordained for them regarding their wives and those their right-hands possess. This is to spare you any difficulty. God is Forgiving and Merciful
O Prophet, We have made lawful for you your wives whose bridal dues you have paid, and the slave-girls you possess from among the prisoners of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and maternal aunts who have migrated with you, and a believing woman who gives herself to the Prophet and whom he wants to take in marriage. We know well what restrictions We have imposed upon them as regards their wives and those whom their right hands possess, (and have exempted you from those restrictions) that there may be no constraint upon you. Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful

Prophet, We made lawful for you, your wives that you gave them their compensations (marriage portions), and those whom your right hand owns (slaves) from what God gave you as spoil, and daughters of your paternal uncle (your father’s brother), and daughters of your paternal aunts (your father’s sister), and daughters of your maternal uncles (your mother’s brother), and daughters of your maternal aunts (your mother’s sister) who migrated with you, and a believing woman who gives herself to the prophet (without asking for marriage portion) if the prophet wants to marry her, this (last group) is only for you and not the other believers. We also know what We mandated to them (the believers) regarding their wives and those whom their right hands own, so that there would be no difficulty (or blame) on you. And God is forgiving and merciful
O Prophet, We have made permissible to you, your wives to whom you have given their dowry, and those whom your right hand possess, out of those who God has assigned to you, and daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts who migrated with you, and any believing woman who dedicates herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to wed her. This is only for you, and not for the believers at large. We know what We have appointed for them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess, in order that there will be no difficulty for you, and God is Oft-Forgiving, Mercifully Redeeming
Prophet, We made lawful for you: your wives who you gave a bridal gift; a maid you own from what Allah allotted you; the daughters of your paternal and maternal uncles and aunts, who emigrated with you; and any believing woman who offers herself to you, and you also want to wed; this last ruling is solely in relation to you, as distinct from the other believers – We know what We made obligatory on other believers regarding their wives and what their slave maids – so that there is no embarrassment for you. Allah is Forgiving, Caring.
O prophet, We have made lawful for you the wives to whom you have already given their dowries, and those who are maintained by your oath, as granted to you by God; and the daughters of the brothers of your father, and the daughters of the sisters of your father, and the daughters of the brothers of your mother, and the daughters of the sisters of your mother - those who emigrated with you. Also, the believing woman who had decreed herself to the prophet, the prophet may marry her if he wishes, as a privilege given only to you and not to the believers. We have already decreed their rights in regard to their spouses and those who are maintained by their oaths. This is to spare you any hardship. God is Forgiver, Merciful.

We give this clarification in order that no blame may lie on you. Andh Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful
Controversial, deprecated, or status undetermined works
O’ Prophet, I have relaxed the laws concerning the marriage for you and only you [so that, as the Head of the State of those days, he may have the flexibility of using the marriage ties for social/ political or other considerations.] You may therefore keep your already married wives and marry the following women: Those whom God has given you as a slave [captured in different wars or being offered by other Head of the States], the daughters of your paternal and maternal uncles and aunts, who have migrated with you, and the believing woman who asks the Prophet to marry her without the dowry, (if the Prophet has a mutual interest in her.) The restriction on the marriage for the Muslim men are already explained in detail and these exceptions [made for the Prophet] is to save you any embarrassment [due to the political nature of the Head of the State position in the future.] God is thus the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful

O Prophet, We have made lawful to you the wives to whom you have given dowries and those whom your right hand possesses, of whatever spoils of war that Allah has given you; and the daughters of your paternal uncles and paternal aunts, and of your paternal and maternal aunts who migrated with you; and any believing woman who gives herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet wishes to take her in marriage. This is only for you and not any other believer. We know the duties We have imposed on them concerning their wives and those whom their right hand possesses, so that there should be no fault in you. Allah is the Forgiving and Merciful
O Prophet, We have made lawful to thee thy wives whom thou hast given their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesses, out of those whom Allah has given thee as prisoners of war, and the daughters of thy paternal uncle and the daughters of thy paternal aunts, and the daughters of thy maternal uncle and the daughters of thy maternal aunts who fled with thee; and a believing woman, if she gives herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet desires to marry her. (It is) especially for thee, not for the believers -- We know what We have ordained for them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess in order that no blame may attach to thee. And Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful

You, you the prophet, that We, We permitted/allowed for you your wives/spouses those who you gave their rewards (dowries), and what your right (hand) owned/possessed from what God bestowed upon you, and your paternal uncles' daughters, and your paternal aunts' daughters, and your maternal uncles' daughters, and your maternal aunts' daughters, who (F) emigrated with you, and a believing woman if she presented herself to the prophet, if the prophet wanted that He marries her, clearly/purely for you from other than the believers, We had known what We had commanded/imposed/stipulated on them in their wives and what their right (hands) owned/possessed, so that strain/blame/sin not be on you, and God was/is forgiving, merciful
O Prophet ! WE have made lawful to thee thy wives whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesses from among those whom ALLAH has given thee as gains of war, and the daughters of thy paternal uncle, and the daughters of thy paternal aunts, and the daughters of thy maternal uncle, and the daughters of thy maternal aunts who have emigrated with thee and any other believing woman if she offers herself for marriage to the Prophet provided the Prophet desires to marry her; this provision is only for thee, and not for other believers - WE have already made known what WE have enjoined on them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess - in order that there may be no difficulty for thee in explaining the Law to them. And ALLAH is Most Forgiving, Merciful
O prophet, we made lawful for you your wives to whom you have paid their due dowry, or what you already have, as granted to you by GOD. Also lawful for you in marriage are the daughters of your father's brothers, the daughters of your father's sisters, the daughters of your mother's brothers, the daughters of your mother's sisters, who have emigrated with you. Also, if a believing woman gave herself to the prophet - by forfeiting the dowry - the prophet may marry her without a dowry, if he so wishes. However, her forfeiting of the dowry applies only to the prophet, and not to the other believers. We have already decreed their rights in regard to their spouses or what they already have. This is to spare you any embarrassment. GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.
Ahmed Raza Khan (Barelvi)
'O Prophet! The Communicator of unseen news, We have made lawful for you those of your wives when you pay dower and the possession of your hand the slave girls whom Allah has given you as the spoils of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts who have migrated with you, and the believing women if she presents herself to the prophet and the prophet desires to marry her, this provision is specially for you and not for the believing men. We know what We have appointed for them concerning their wives and the possession of their hands the slave girls; this specialty is of your so that there may not be any hardship on you. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Prophet! We have made lawful to you, your wives whom you have paid their dowers and (similarly) those (wives) whom your right hand owns (after granting them freedom in lieu of their dower in marriage) from among those whom Allah has given you as gains of war. (And also lawful for the marriage were) the daughters of your paternal uncles and of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and of your maternal aunts as have emigrated with you. And (also has been made lawful to the Prophet) any other believing woman who offers herself to the Prophet (for marriage without claiming dower), provided the Prophet (too) desires to wed her. (This is a special permission of marrying more than four wives at a time) only for you to the exclusion of (other) believers in order that there may be no difficulty for you (in explaining the law to the believers). We know what We have enjoined on them (in the Qur'an) regarding their wives (from among the free women) and also about (their marrying of) those whom their right hands own, in order that there may be no difficulty for you (in explaining the law to them). And Allah is Great Protector, Ever Merciful
O Prophet! Surely, We have made lawful for you those of your wives whom you have paid their dower, and those who are in your possession (according to Allah’s commandments) whom Allah has given you as spoils of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles, and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles, and the daughters of your maternal aunts who have emigrated with you, and any other believing woman who dedicates herself to the Holy Prophet (for marriage), provided the Holy Prophet (too) has the intention to marry her (so all these are lawful for you. This command is) exclusively for you, not for other believers (of the Umma [Community]). Indeed, We know best what We have prescribed for them (the Muslims) concerning their wives and the slave girls they possess. (But this exclusive command for lawfulness of number of wives in your respect has been given) so that there remains no difficulty for you (in making elaborate arrangements for the education and training of the women of the Muslim Umma [community]). And Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever-Merciful
O Prophet (Muhammad SAW)! Verily, We have made lawful to you your wives, to whom you have paid their Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage), and those (captives or slaves) whom your right hand possesses - whom Allah has given to you, and the daughters of your Amm (paternal uncles) and the daughters of your Ammah (paternal aunts) and the daughters of your Khal (maternal uncles) and the daughters of your Khalah (maternal aunts) who migrated (from Makkah) with you, and a believing woman if she offers herself to the Prophet, and the Prophet wishes to marry her; a privilege for you only, not for the (rest of) the believers. Indeed We know what We have enjoined upon them about their wives and those (captives or slaves) whom their right hands possess, - in order that there should be no difficulty on you. And Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful
O Prophet, We have made lawful for thee thy wives whom thou hast given their wages and what thy right hand owns, spoils of war that God has given thee, and the daughters of thy uncles paternal and aunts paternal, thy uncles maternal and aunts maternal, who have emigrated with thee, and any woman believer, if she give herself to the Prophet and if the Prophet desire to take her in marriage, for thee exclusively, apart from the believers -- We know what We have imposed upon them touching their wives and what their right hands own -- that there may be no fault in thee; God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate
O thou prophet! verily, we make lawful for thee thy wives to whom thou hast given their hire, and what thy right hand possesses out of the booty that God has granted thee, and the daughters of thy paternal uncle and the daughters of thy paternal aunts, and the daughters of thy maternal uncle and the daughters of thy maternal aunts, provided they have fled with thee, and any believing woman if she give herself to the prophet, if the prophet desire to marry her;- a special privilege this for thee, above the other believers. We knew what we ordained for them concerning their wives and what their right hands possess, that there should be no hindrance to thee, and God is forgiving, merciful
O prophet, We have allowed thee thy wives unto whom thou hast given their dower, and also the slaves which thy right hand possesseth, of the booty which God hath granted thee; and the daughters of thy uncle, and the daughters of thy aunts, both on thy father's side, and on thy mother's side, who have fled with thee from Mecca, and any other believing woman, if she give herself unto the prophet; in case the prophet desireth to take her to wife. This is a peculiar privilege granted unto thee, above the rest of the true believers. We know what we have ordained them concerning their wives, and the slaves whom their right hands possess: Lest it should be deemed a crime in thee to make use of the privilege granted thee; for God is gracious and merciful
O Prophet! we allow thee thy wives whom thou hast dowered, and the slaves whom thy right hand possesseth out of the booty which God hath granted thee, and the daughters of thy uncle, and of thy paternal and maternal aunts who fled with thee to Medina, and any believing woman who hath given herself up to the Prophet, if the Prophet desired to wed her - a Privilege for thee above the rest of the Faithful. We well know what we have settled for them, in regard to their wives and to the slaves whom their right hands hold, that there may be no fault on thy part: and God is Indulgent, Merciful
Prophet, We have made lawful for you the wives to whom you have granted dowries and the slave-girls whom God has given you as booty; the daughters of your paternal and maternal uncles and of your paternal and maternal aunts who fled with you; and any believing woman who gives herself to the Prophet and whom the Prophet wishes to take in marriage. This privilege is yours alone, being granted to no other believer. We well know the duties We have imposed on them concerning their wives and their slave-girls: so that none may blame you. God is ever forgiving and compassionate

O Prophet, We have indeed made lawful to you the wives to whom you have paid their dowries and the slaves [prisoners of war, after they are freed] that Allah has assigned to you. [We have allowed as wives to you] the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts and daughters of maternal uncles and aunts who migrated with you. Any believing woman who dedicates herself to the Prophet and to whom the Prophet wants to wed [is acceptable]. This only applies to you and not to other believers. We realize what We have appointed to them as far as wives and slaves so that there will be no difficulty for you. Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Prophet! We have made lawful to you the wives whom you have paid their dowries, as well as those whom God has placed in your right hand through war, as also the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts, who have migrated with you; and any believing woman who offers herself freely to the Prophet and whom the Prophet might be willing to wed: [this latter] applies to you alone and not to other believers. We well know what We have made obligatory to them in respect of their wives and other women their right hands possess; and thus no blame shall attach to you. God is Much- Forgiving, Merciful.
O Nabi! We have made exclusively lawful for you, your wives to whom you have given their dowries, as well as what your right hand possesses (bondmaids) from among the captives of war whom Allah has bestowed upon you; and the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts, the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts, who have migrated with you; and any believing woman who has granted herself to the Nabi, provided the Nabi also wants to marry her... This does not apply to the other believers... We know exactly what We have made obligatory upon them concerning their wives and their bondmaids... (We explain this) in order that there may be no blame upon you... Allah is the Ghafur, the Rahim.

O'Prophet! Verily We have made lawful to you the wives whom you have paid their dowries, and those whom your right hand possesses of those whom Allah has assigned to you, and (marriage with) the daughters of your paternal uncle, and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and daughters of your maternal uncle, and the daughters of your maternal aunts who have emigrated with you, and a believing woman if she gives herself unto the Prophet, if the Prophet desires to wed her, for you exclusively, not for the (rest of the) believers. Indeed We know what We have ordained for them about their wives and those whom their right hands possess in order that there should be no difficulty for you. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
Al-muntakhab fi tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim
O you the Prophet: We have ratified and confirmed by sanction and solemn enactment your wives whom you have dowered as well as those on hand -the prisoners of war- whom Allah has made assignable to you. Also lawful to you are the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts who emigrated with you in addition to any woman of the same law who dedicates herself to the Prophet and the Prophet wishes to be bound to her in wedlock. This is a privilege that is granted to you exclusively and not to the Muslims at large. We know what We have promulgated and legislated for them concerning their wives and those on hand so that you do not feel that you stand at the mark of criticism and Allah has always been Ghafurun and Rahimun
O prophet! We have certainly made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their dowries and those whom your right hand possesses from among the prisoners of war whom Allah has given to you, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who migrated with you and a believing woman if she gave herself to the prophet, if the prophet (too) intends (to seek) her in marriage, exclusively for you not for the (other) believers, We know what We have appointed for them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess, (this is clarified so) that there should not be any blame on you, and Allah is Protectively Forgiving, Merciful.
